I identify with going back to reconsider grad school beliefs (and I’m so curious about your diss!)
This made me laugh, “when he got to this specific verse, he floated into the air and his body disappeared, the remaining lines recited by a disembodied voice. On the topic of reconsidering grad school beliefs (also around mysticism), I posted an essay I wrote in grad school https://loveofallwisdom.com/blog/2012/09/the-trouble-with-phenomenological-similarities/ and years later wrote a retraction. https://loveofallwisdom.com/blog/2022/11/who-cares-about-phenomenological-similarities/
My diss is freely available online, so go have a look! It's available on my blog site: https://loveofallwisdom.com/other-writings/
(FYI, everything I post on Substack is also posted on the blog site, as well as fourteen years' worth of writing from before I came to Substack.)
